Roxanne Shears is not new to Grant Public Schools. Mrs. Shears has been substitute teaching in Grant for a few years. "After graduating from high school, I worked at Napa Auto Parts for 14 years. I then became a stay-at-home mom for 6 years. In 2021, I discovered my passion for substitute teaching with the Grant Public School District, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in education." Currently teaching 12th grade Special Ed, she has her Bachelor of Science in Human Services and currently working on Teaching Certification for Special Education. Mrs. Shears says, "My role as a 12th grade Special Education teacher involves me supporting students with diverse learning needs. I assist students as an advocate with their needs, ensuring their voices are heard. As a co-teacher with two of my colleagues, I can ensure that students will have more individualized support academically. We can collaborate to adapt curriculum and create accommodations to ensure students with IEPs can access grade-level content."

Alex Russo won the 126lbs weight class championship at the Ron Helmbolt Sparta Invitational on Saturday January 11th. The 16 team tournament boasted some of the best teams from the area. Alex started with a pin over his Plainwell opponent, before a major decision in the semifinals against Hendrick from Sparta. Russo also majored Bessinger from Grand Haven in the finals. Kashton Atwood finished 6th at 132lbs. After a pin against his Ravenna opponent in the first round, Kashton fell to the 1# seed Gant. Atwood won his next match by tech fall, then a decision over Coller from Byron Center. Kashton fell in the placement match to DeKorne from Sparta. The Tigers go to Kent City next Wednesday for a CSAA Tri meet.

Chelsea Stech Ms. Stech is our 10th grade special ed teacher. A graduate of Spring Arbor University with a degree in Special Education and English, Ms. Stech has this to say about her job at GHS, "Being a 10th-grade special education teacher is like starring in a never-ending improv show where every scene involves teaching English, Geometry, and juggling a mountain of paperwork. Between IEPs, REEDs, accommodation logs, and progress reports, I’m keeping office supply stores in business one pen at a time. I decode metaphors in English, explain how triangles have drama in Geometry, and mentor my team in technology and IEP wizardry, all while inventing the art of speed multitasking. My co-teaching superpower? Pretending I have it all together, even as my fifth pen of the day disappears into the void."

Final Exams We are two weeks from the end of the first semester. Students will be participating in final exams for their classes with preparation for that starting the week of the 6th. Final exam grades are worth 20% of the overall grade and can have a dramatic impact on a student's final grade in their classes. Parents, as you look at the grades your student is earning right now, emphasize the importance of doing well on their exams. A few important notes; if a senior hit benchmark on both areas of the SAT, then they are exempt from taking their final exams and there are possible schedule changes for the week of exams, and those will be sent out by Wednesday this week.

Jesse Lang This summer was a whirlwind of new hires here at GHS and one of the positions we filled was in our special education department. Jesse Lang is no stranger to small town schools as he grew up in Evart, MI. Jesse's education took him to Idaho where he attended Boise State. "A superhero in sneakers," is how Jesse describes his job here at GHS, "guiding 9th-grade special ed students through math and English adventures. With humor and heart, we turn challenges into triumphs one starburst at a time, building confidence and resilience while making learning fun. My classroom is a launchpad for future trailblazers ready to take on the world!" Jesse also helps our varsity boys basketball team. Coach George says, "Jesse has a great understanding of the game and has been able to pass that knowledge to our players. He is also another good set of eyes and ears on the bench that is able to give us in game information."

If haven't heard, we have a new face at GHS! Meet Carolyn Whyte our new Assistant Principal! Carolyn is from Gaylord, Michigan and a graduate of Gaylord St. Mary's. She completed her undergraduate degree at Alma College, her Master's degree from Central Michigan University and her Educational Specialist degree from Grand Valley State University. If you recognize the name, it is probably because you remember her from the two years she spent as the Grant Middle School assistant principal at the start of her career in administration. For the past 18 years she has been the principal of Wayland Middle School. After retiring from Wayland, Carolyn realized that she still has more to give. She officially joined our team last week. We are very fortunate to have her wealth of knowledge and expertise! Welcome to the team Carolyn!

Meet Ethan Mansfield, one of our science teachers here at GHS. This is Ethan's first job as a teacher after graduating from Cedarville University with a B.S. in Geology. Mr. Mansfield says, "I love my job at GHS. I have the opportunity to teach three amazing classes; Environmental Science (Earth Science), Biology, and Horticulture & Botany. Since Environmental Science is a freshmen class and Biology is a sophomore class, I get the chance to build student relationships for two years in a row with a lot of my students. In my botany class I have a wide mixture of grade levels and students who truly love the class experience. Outside of class, I help coach soccer at the high school. I also run the disc golf club for the high school students. I personally love to travel to new places, play games, and watch sports."

Class of 2025 Parents & Seniors, One of the most exciting and important times for seniors and parents is preparing for commencement this spring. We want to make sure this year’s senior class has everything they need to celebrate and be honored for all their hard work in reaching this important milestone. IMPORTANT – Please look for the class of 2025 official graduation announcement samples arriving to you in the mail next week. The announcements were designed by representatives of the senior class and they are an important part of your graduation order to send to family and friends regarding commencement details. On Thursday, September 19th the Jostens team will be distributing information to the senior class followed by an email to parents with more details on placing your graduation order, most importantly being your Cap & Gown for commencement. Please keep an eye out in your inbox and open it for complete details on the graduation products and the deadline to have orders placed. ALL graduation orders need to be placed by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH. Orders can be placed anytime online or turned in to the Jostens drop box in the high school office prior to September 27th. Jostens will also be in school on Friday, September 27th if your senior has questions or would like to turn the order in directly to them at that time. It is extremely important to have your order submitted by this deadline. We want to make sure we allow plenty of time to produce and prepare the senior graduation orders. If you have any questions, please call/text the Jostens team at (616) 330 – 2141 or email at studentkeepsakes@jostens.com
