Last week the Tiger basketball program joined forces with Kuyper College and hosted a 3 day skills camp. Throughout those 3 days the kids took part in drills that focused on defensive positioning, off the ball communication, help side defense, shooting, dribbling, passing, using screens and moving without the ball. They were also able to put these skills into action with some scrimmages. Thank you to Coach Bailey and his Kuyper College crew for coming in to work with our kids.

Summer ATG Training Program! We have an amazing opportunity for our Grant student/athletes. Coach Beatie (Track and Field Coach) is looking for individuals to work through a summer ATG training program at Grant Schools. This program will focus on speed, building strength, improving mobility, and mitigating injuries through the utilization of knees-over-toes movements and a focus on addressing underlying imbalances. The cost for Grant student/athletes is $150 per person for the whole summer (siblings would get a discounted price)! He will also welcome anyone who would like to drop in on days they can make it at $10 per day. Days and times are as follows: Monday 1:00pm-2:30, Tuesday and Thursday 11:00am-12:30. This program is open to all boys and girls 7th - 12th grade. Spots are limited so if you would like your son or daughter to take part please contact Mr. Rider at the high school or by email krider@grantps.net.

Laurie is one of our bus drivers and high school parapros. Her job and duties are to assist in a classroom if and when needed. Some of her duties include reading tests, taking students out of the classroom and giving them one on one learning if needed. She loves riding her motorcycle and going to her cabin. She also works on crafts and loves to cook.

Meet Travis Webb
Travis Webb is one of our math teachers at the high school. He teaches Algebra 2, Geometry, and Algebra 1. Mr. Webb is also a student council advisor. He works with the executive board of student council to organize events like Homecoming and Snowcoming. Before coming to GHS, Mr. Webb was an adjunct professor at Baker College and Muskegon Community College for 16 years.

Meet Lilly Newmann
One of our new faces at GHS is 9th grade social studies teacher Lilly Newmann. A graduate of Central Michigan University, Lilly likes to hike, sing, hang out with friends and family, and travel. As a 9th Grade Social Studies Teacher, her role is to "guide students through an engaging exploration of history, civics, and the world around them. By creating a classroom environment rooted in mutual respect, I aim to foster a love for learning while helping students develop critical thinking and analytical skills. The focus is on not only mastering key concepts but also on building strong, positive relationships where students feel valued, heard, and supported in their educational journey. Through open communication and collaborative activities, I work to ensure that each student’s voice is important as they explore and connect with the material."

Devon Conley
For over 20 years, Devon Conley has been roaming the HS hallways. Mr. Conley currently teaches Government/Econ, and Phyc/Soc. as well as being the NHS and Chess Advisors. A graduate of GVSU, Mr. Conley likes to play guitar, read, and go to concerts. He has even dabbled in some acting.

There is NO chess match today.

Roxanne Shears is not new to Grant Public Schools. Mrs. Shears has been substitute teaching in Grant for a few years. "After graduating from high school, I worked at Napa Auto Parts for 14 years. I then became a stay-at-home mom for 6 years. In 2021, I discovered my passion for substitute teaching with the Grant Public School District, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in education." Currently teaching 12th grade Special Ed, she has her Bachelor of Science in Human Services and currently working on Teaching Certification for Special Education. Mrs. Shears says, "My role as a 12th grade Special Education teacher involves me supporting students with diverse learning needs. I assist students as an advocate with their needs, ensuring their voices are heard. As a co-teacher with two of my colleagues, I can ensure that students will have more individualized support academically. We can collaborate to adapt curriculum and create accommodations to ensure students with IEPs can access grade-level content."

Alex Russo won the 126lbs weight class championship at the Ron Helmbolt Sparta Invitational on Saturday January 11th. The 16 team tournament boasted some of the best teams from the area. Alex started with a pin over his Plainwell opponent, before a major decision in the semifinals against Hendrick from Sparta. Russo also majored Bessinger from Grand Haven in the finals. Kashton Atwood finished 6th at 132lbs. After a pin against his Ravenna opponent in the first round, Kashton fell to the 1# seed Gant. Atwood won his next match by tech fall, then a decision over Coller from Byron Center. Kashton fell in the placement match to DeKorne from Sparta. The Tigers go to Kent City next Wednesday for a CSAA Tri meet.

Chelsea Stech
Ms. Stech is our 10th grade special ed teacher. A graduate of Spring Arbor University with a degree in Special Education and English, Ms. Stech has this to say about her job at GHS, "Being a 10th-grade special education teacher is like starring in a never-ending improv show where every scene involves teaching English, Geometry, and juggling a mountain of paperwork. Between IEPs, REEDs, accommodation logs, and progress reports, I’m keeping office supply stores in business one pen at a time. I decode metaphors in English, explain how triangles have drama in Geometry, and mentor my team in technology and IEP wizardry, all while inventing the art of speed multitasking. My co-teaching superpower? Pretending I have it all together, even as my fifth pen of the day disappears into the void."

The NHS Winter Blood Drive is coming up on January 21st. We would appreciate it more than you know if you could donate! It will be taking place in the Media Center at Grant High School. We hope to see you there, and thank you in advance for donating!
