You should apply for financial assistance even if you don't think you will qualify. Keep in mind the difference between cost and affordability. The majority of students do not pay the full cost of college because most students receive some form of financial assistance. Due to the availability of financial assistance, you should not rule out colleges with higher costs. For instance, if your expected family contribution (EFC) is $5,000, you would be eligible for $3,000 in financial assistance at a college with a total cost of $8,000. At a college with a total cost of $35,000, however, you would be eligible for up to $30,000 in financial assistance. In other words your family would be contributing the same amount at both schools. Keep track of deadlines to apply for academic (sometimes called "merit") scholarships at the colleges and universities that interest you. Visit their scholarship websites, call or e-mail. Most deadlines are in January, but some institutions have academic scholarship deadlines in November or December for early decision applicants. Even after you've mailed in your enrollment deposit, opportunities for additional financial assistance may still exist. Feel free to call your college or university's financial aid office to ask for guidance.
